Susan Rienzo’s news:
Florida got too big for her britches so we have ceded from Georgia!
Florida members now have a new blog at www.saqaflorida.wordpress.com. Please join us there. Georgia members have joined in with South Carolina under Margaret Hunt who can be reached via email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
I made a piece this year about hunger in Haiti called “Mud Cookies”. It was at the Mancuso World show and the Mancuso Florida show.
It is based on a photo I saw in Nat’l Geographic by AP photographer Ariana Cubillos whom I contacted and got permission to use for the basis of my work. Women in Haiti mix dirt and clay with salt and shortening to make mud cookies which is a food staple for Haiti’s poor.
I learned a lot about Haiti from my correspondence with Ariana and I think Doctors Without Borders does wonderful work there.

Publication Times Three
I was delighted to recently learn that I will have three quilts included in the upcoming book 500 Art Quilts! Published by Lark Books, it is described as “an inspiring collection of contemporary work.”
My three pieces to be included are, Reconciliation
Ti Plants A-Glow-Glow
and Out of the Blue
Each applicant was allowed to submit three pieces. I guessed there might be sections with a variety of themes, so I sent three very different pieces. It seems my strategy paid off.
More info on the book can be found at http://www.larkbooks.com/catalog?isbn=9781600590580 .

Well…I may as well join the bandwagon!
I am a SAQA member and I have created a quilt called the Lost Heroes Art Quilt. It honors the service men and women who lost their lives in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The quilt was dedicated in Washington, D.C. in late September at the Time of Remembrance and it will travel for two years around the United States.
If anyone is interested, you can visit the website: http://www.LostHeroesArtQuilt.org There is also a ompanion book whose proceeds (100%) go to Snowball Express, a charitable organization that supports the young children of the fallen.
Also, I’d love to know if there are any art quilting groups in south Florida that I can become a part of.
I also live in Massachusetts for part of the year.
I moved to Altamonte Springs in October of ’09. I am a SAQA member, I’d like to announce that I will have an exhibit consisting of 10 of my quilts in Ann Arbor, MI Feb 15 to April 12 as part of the University of Michigan Health System’s Gift for Art Program. The work will be displayed in the 2D UH Main Lobby Gallery. Here is one of the pieces that will be there, Titled “Lilies in Bloom” completed Dec ’09, measures 38″ wide by 44.5″ long, Dye painted on Silk broadcloth, machine quilted.
Any questions you can contact me at my e-mail address.
I am also new to S. Florida and looking for an art-quilting community. I am not nearly as accomplished as Laurie, but I recently retired from a demanding corporate career and now finally have time to focus on art quilting. All of the groups I have found in S. Florida seem oriented to sewing and more traditional quilting, but I would love the energy and inspiration of an art quilting community. I have an art background from college and did some weaving, pottery, graphic, and photographic design there as well, and, in the intervening years, have continually used sewing, fabrics, and many fiber-art techniques to create one-of-a-kind pieces. In the past, because of long hours and lots of travel, I was never able to join a group, but now I am very much looking forward to learning from others and sharing what I can.
I live in Wellington, but would be delighted to participate from Delray to Jupiter, East or West and am available days or nights. Thanks so much!
